Our Hearing Instrument Specialist

Joel Duguay, President, Hearing Instrument Specialist (HIS)

Welcome to Elephant Ear Hearing! The inspiration for this practice has been the influence of many people, clients and experiences that have molded me into the hearing instrument specialist that I am today. In my early years, I watched my father build a hearing practice centered around his clients and learned how he connected with them on a personal level. I witnessed the genuine care he had for them and for their success with hearing aids. Success led to better living through better hearing. This approach made a distinct impression on me...his passion was improving lives! My mother was not in the hearing field, but she was a registered nurse and quite possibly the best there ever was. She had a unique way of making anyone she surrounded herself with feel good. She was the most caring person I have ever known. On a trip to Thailand with friends, she had the opportunity to spend several days caring for, learning from, and even riding elephants. She developed an instant connection and love for these great animals. The combination of her love for elephants and their ability to hear sounds below and above the frequency range of humans over long distances, gave birth to the name for my practice, Elephant Ear Hearing.

As I progressed through school, my strength in mathematics led me to graduating top of my class in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, after which I started my work career. In time, I realized this wasn’t the best fit for my personality and I decided to join my father Michael and my brother Brian at Microtone Hearing Aid Center. I quickly learned that I shared the innate need to help people improve their relationships and lives through better hearing. From that day forward I haven't looked back.
My brother and I continued to grow and duplicate what our father had built. Our father decided to retire in late 2010 and we took over in Jan 2011. From there we added additional practice locations and expanded the number of patients we helped exponentially. My brother still operates these extremely busy practices and carries on our father’s history at Microtone.

For the past 2 decades of my career in the hearing aid industry, I have treated and helped thousands of clients both in-office and in-home. I carried my father’s legacy of connection and care for his patients and my mother’s compassion and joy for people through my career to get me to where I am today. I formed Elephant Ear Hearing in memory of my late father's commitment to his patients and in memory of my late mother’s love for elephants.

My desire with this practice is to tailor hearing aid solutions to your individual needs. I believe that experience is the source of wisdom and there are very few practitioners in Northern California that have more experience in this field. It is my passion working with the most challenging hearing impairments or clients who have not had success in the past; I derive the most joy from their success. The culmination of my experience, my background and my sincere care for my clients brought me to where I am today and is the inspiration for this unique practice.

I decided this practice would be a "Hybrid” practice, meaning I have the ability to perform hearing aid services including the selection, fitting, and programming of hearing aids, the scan or molded impressions of your ear(s) either in the clinic, or in the privacy of your own home. I have cared for many clients in-home over the years and have found it to be very beneficial to determine all the specific challenges the client is facing in order to achieve their best hearing. This option allows clients that have difficulty or simply cannot travel into the office access to hearing care. It is also a great solution for busy professionals who may need appointments at times other than the normal 9-5 business hours.

If you or someone you care about struggles with hearing loss, has tried unsuccessfully with hearing aids, or has been told hearing aids won’t help, please come and see us. It is my sincere pleasure to share my inspiration and experience with you or your loved one(s) on their way to their best hearing possible either in the comfort of their own home, or in our clinic.
